New York City, often referred to as NYC or simply New York, is the most populous city in the United States. Located in the southernmost tip of New York State, it is home to more than 8 million people and over 22 million people in the larger metropolitan area. It is the financial capital of the country, with Wall Street and the One World Trade Center located within its boundaries. The city's economy is responsible for much of the economic activity in both New Jersey and New York.
The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, which includes Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the New York Philharmonic and the New York City Ballet, is the largest performing arts center in the United States. In 1925, New York City became the most populous city in the world, surpassing London which had held that title for a century. New York City has an extensive transportation network with more than 12,000 yellow taxis, 120,000 daily cyclists, subway, bus and rail systems, large airports, iconic bridges and tunnels, ferry service and even an aerial commuter streetcar. The city's drinking water does not need to be purified by water treatment plants due to its natural undisturbed water filtration process; only chlorination is necessary to ensure its purity.
New York's food culture is diverse due to its immigrants and large numbers of dining customers. The city is built on three islands - Manhattan, Staten Island and western Long Island - making land scarce and increasing its population density. The New York Stock Exchange is the largest stock exchange in terms of dollar volume while NASDAQ is the largest in terms of number of quotes. There have been fourteen World Series championship series between teams from New York City. New York was only the third largest American port at the time of the American Revolution but gradually managed to dominate trade by mid-19th century.
Its largest newspaper was owned by a famous supporter and was heavily sponsored and financed by the city's reestablished upper class. Being located in one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs which are each a county in the state of New York. New York City is an international hub for business, finance, fashion, medicine, entertainment, media and culture with an extraordinary collection of museums, galleries, concert halls, media outlets and financial markets. Its symbol is the Statue of Liberty but it has become an icon itself as it is where people from all nations come to become Americans and if they stay in the city they become New Yorkers.
