For the most part, New York City is a safe place to live. You just need to stay away from renting or buying property in dangerous neighborhoods. If you're confident and can get by in any situation, but you also know when to back down, you'll be able to manage most of the neighborhoods here. You'll see dog walkers walking the pets of New York's elite, nannies walking the children of the elite, and lots of luxury stores. It's safe to live alone in New York City as a woman if you use common sense and don't walk through unlit areas, ride the subway alone at night, or live in a dangerous neighborhood.
So while you'll often hear others talk about New York City's toughest neighborhoods, it's definitely safer than many cities like Detroit or Philadelphia. With so many places to visit in New York, locals tell us that the subway is the best (and cheapest) form of transportation in New York even now. While Syracuse's safest neighborhoods are ranked as some of the best areas in the country to live in, bad neighborhoods, such as Southwest and Near Eastside, are some of the most dangerous. And these statistics between cities really give an idea of how safe New York City is compared to the most dangerous areas in the United States. Of course, you should respect the space and avoid any kind of humor or loud conversations, as other people could be grieving the loss of a loved one.
