New York is a state of the United States of America, one of the 13 original colonies and states. It is bounded to the west and north by Lake Erie, the Canadian province of Ontario, Lake Ontario and the Canadian province of Quebec; to the east by the New England states of Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut; to the southeast by the Atlantic Ocean and New Jersey; and to the south by Pennsylvania. The Hudson-Mohawk lowlands follow the Hudson River north from New York City to Albany and then turns west along the Mohawk River. Most of the municipality is located on the island of Manhattan, at the mouth of the Hudson River and the East River, and its southern end, at the confluence of the two rivers, represents the birthplace of New York City itself. The state is divided into five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island.
These five boroughs are coextensive with five counties: New York County (Manhattan), Kings County (Brooklyn), Bronx County (The Bronx), Richmond County (Staten Island) and Queens County (Queens).The State University of New York (SUNY) public system includes campuses in New York City, such as the University of Health Sciences of the State of New York, the Institute of Fashion Technology, the Maritime College, and the School of Optometry. New York City also has an extensive network of highways and highways, linking the city's districts to each other and to North Jersey, Westchester County, Long Island, and southwestern Connecticut through several bridges and tunnels. New York's airspace is one of the busiest air transport corridors in the world. The state and New York City in particular continue to be a major center for finance and economy in America. It is also home to many formative impulses in American art and culture, as well as being an important element in national political life.
The headquarters of the United Nations are located in New York City. Slavery was integrally linked to New York's economy through slave labor throughout its port and banking and shipping industries that traded with the southern United States. There are numerous ethnic enclaves throughout New York City, such as Unisphere, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park and downtown Flushing in Queens; downtown Brooklyn, Coney Island, Williamsburg, Park Slope and Prospect Park in Brooklyn; The Bronx Zoo, The New York Botanical Garden, and The Bronx's Grand Concourse; as well as The Staten Island Ferry that transports passengers between Staten Island and The South Ferry terminal that borders Battery Park in Lower Manhattan. The Adirondack Plateau is known for its Appalachian Mountains and its forests, waterfalls and lakes. It includes New York's highest peak - Mount Marcy. The Bronx (Bronx County) is located on mainland New York City.
In addition to its maritime border with Rhode Island, it also has an international border with Canada. New York City's food culture includes a variety of international cuisines influenced by its immigrant history. The New York Rangers - one of League's Six Originals - play at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. The Delaware, Susquehanna, and Allegheny rivers drain southern and western parts of New York State providing much of New York City's water supply. Each municipality is coextensive with a judicial district of New York State's Unified Judicial System. This includes The Criminal Court and The Civil Court as local courts while The New York Supreme Court conducts main trials and appeals.
